When six-year-old Darian Thomas lost his father and his mother could no longer care for him, he began his life with grandmother, Sherry Thomas. Darian entered the YMCA PrYme Time program shy and withdrawn. According to Sherry, the YMCA is an extension of his new loving home and YMCA staff say they've seen huge improvements in his behavior.
In 2007, YMCA provided a total of 11,478 participants with $2,667,237 in financial assistance to participante in YMCA programming such as PrYme Time.
Joan Howard can't stop smiling about the "Your Heart Matters" program.
"I've gained an understanding of how nutrition is so vital to weight loss and overall health. With the help of the YMCA, I've taken control of my blood pressue and have increased my physical activity. So far I've lost 30 pounds and 26 inches, but the best part is I can keep up with my twin grandkids."
During the 2007 fiscal year, 64,959 individuals participated in YMCA Health Enhancement Programs, with 2,8125 receiving YMCA financial assistance.
After months of paying for child care and camp, eventually Suzanne Hamilton, a single mom of Bryce 7, and Alyssa, 12, ran out of funds.
"When I came to pick up the kids the Y said they needed an extra $50 for a field trip. It just crushed me. We had no family to help. One of the YMCA staff said, I don't know why you are saying you have no family...we are your family. Her kids participate in swim team, camp and after-school care.
"I don't think people realize a quarter matters. It does matter."
In 2007, 8,760 children participated in YMCA Child Care Programs with 3,034 of those receiving YMCA financial assistance totaling $1,109,918.
