Wellness Challenge
presented
and sponsored by
Stonewood Grill & Tavern
and Brooks Rehabilitation

The Wellness Challenge is a 12-week lifestyle change competition designed to promote weight loss and increase the awareness for participants to know their key fitness indicators. During the competition, participants will be assigned to one of the YMCA’s certified personal trainers. Our trained staff will collect pre and post test information such as blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose. Participants will work out in groups of four, twice a week. They will receive the most up-to-date fitness and wellness information designed to educate and empower lifestyle changes.
At the conclusion of the training program each team will receive a cumulative point total toward the Vystar Corporate Cup. Point totals will be determined based on percentage weight lost, percentage change in health indicators and workouts attended. In addition, the top individual participants will be recognized and awarded prizes.
Wellness Challenge
Winner Lost 45 Pounds - Still Going Strong
For
Anthony Cobb, Duval County School employee, the First Coast Games Wellness
Challenge came at the perfect time. His doctor didn't like the results of his
stress test so prescribed medication with adverse side effects. At the same
time, Anthony received the email at work about the First Coast Games Wellness
Challenge. The 240-pound Cobb said yes to the challenge and no to the meds.
He began with his personal trainer at San Marco Family YMCA, along with four
others. They mixed it up with weight training three times a week and walked on
the treadmills every day for over an hour. With the help of a YMCA nutritionist,
Cobb received a calorie-restricted diet and information about how to monitor
eating. "The thing that really motivated me the most was going to the store and
reading labels. A bag of cookies would be 360 calories. Why eat 400 calories in
five minutes to work it off in one hour?"
After 12 weeks of sweat and discipline, Cobb arrived 45 pounds lighter -- having
lost the most weight in the entire 2007 wellness challenge. Cobb went from a 38"
waist to a 32-34" waist and says comments from co-workers that he looks younger
motivates him to continue the lifestyle he learned during the challenge. "I am
mindful. I try and keep it up," he says. "I put too much into that to go back."
