In the News: First Special Olympics Swim Team in Naussau
For more than four decades, Special Olympics has been bringing one message to the world: people with intellectual disabilities can and will succeed if given the opportunity. Nassau County Special Olympics has been running many sports for individuals with disabilities for many years, including track and field and bowling, but the county has never been able to get a swimming program started.
The McArthur Family YMCA in Fernandina Beach runs a program called Challenger Sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This year-round program includes volleyball, basketball and swimming. Matt Bellar and program director Tom Christenson started working the Special Olympics on teaming up to have the first Special Olympics swim team in Nassau County.
