Did you
know that drowning is the third leading cause of death of
young children? That's right - a child under the age
of seven is 14 times more likely to die in a body of water
than in a motor vehicle.
The YMCA
of Florida's Coast will help lower these risks and set
parents' minds at ease this summer with YMCA Splash.
YMCA
Splash is a program designed to help teach kids and their
families how to be safer in and around water. It is geared
for kids from four to ten-years-old, and includes 45
minutes of indoor learning and activities, followed by 45
minutes of in-water skills and games, and concludes with a
safety celebration pool party.
"We
nurture kids' healthy, successful development all year
long through aquatics and other programs," said Nikos
Westmoreland of the YMCA. "We're running Splash out of
concern for their safety. Plus, we've found that
overcoming fears and learning to swim can have a fantastic
effect on a child's self-esteem."
YMCA
Splash kicks-off this year in Mandarin at the Williams
Family YMCA on Saturday, June 14th from 10:00 to 1:00, and
will be conducted at YMCAs in the Arlington, Orange Park,
Fernandina Beach, Ponte Vedra, and St. Augustine
communities the following two Saturdays.
For over one hundred years, people have
been learning to swim at the YMCA. Our association currently
has 14 pools offering swimming lessons for everyone from infants to adults, lap swimming and aqua aerobic classes for fitness, competitive swim teams for kids, and open swim periods for family fun. Many of our pools are heated and open year round. All pools are supervised by certified Lifeguards. Available at:
